Woof’n Rose Winery, Ramona Valley
Woof’n Rose winemaker, vineyard operator, and co-proprietor Stephen (Steve) Kahle, is a retired Electrical and Software Engineer. From Columbia Missouri in the heart of ‘Beer’ country, near Herman Missouri the original but at the time defunct US wine producing region, Steve remembers touring ‘mushroom’ caves originally used for aging the area’s wines. Transferring to San Diego with a leading computer manufacturer Steve, wife and co-proprietor Marilyn, and sons settled in Ramona. One of the pioneer Ramona Valley AVA vineyards, Woof’n Rose started as a landscaping project in 1995 and became a winery in 2007. Steve and Marilyn most enjoy the social interaction with their customers enjoying the view of the Ramona Valley and sampling wines onsite, many wines are competition medalists.
Small production, around 300 case per year, focuses on the five Bordeaux varietals, and on Grenache Noir and Alicante Bouschet, all estate grown. Coming into production next year are small plots of Montepulciano and Carmenere.
Steve serves as the education chair with the San Diego County Vintners Association.
