FISH & MEN
The High Cost of Cheap Fish
A Documentary Feature Film
By Darby Duffin and Adam Jones
FISH & MEN exposes the high cost of cheap fish by revealing how consumer demand drives the global seafood economy threatening local fishing communities and public health.
Today, 91% of the seafood in America is imported as the U.S. is flooded with six billion tons of foreign seafood. Most consumers eat blissfully unaware of where their seafood comes from or even think to ask. Yet, the demand-driven seafood economy is having dire consequences.

Today, 91% of our fish is imported and the U.S. is flooded with six billion tons of imported seafood. Consumers across America eat blissfully unaware of where their seafood is from or the dire consequences that a demand for five species of fish sourced from distant oceans brings to our shores. FISH & MEN exposes the high cost of cheap fish in the modern seafood economy and the forces threatening local fishing communities and public health by revealing how our choices as consumers drives the global seafood trade. But, a new movement is underway – an opportunity to return sustainability to both fish and fishermen. Thriving on local communities, pioneering fishermen and celebrated chefs are leading a revolutionary new model, a ‘Catch of the Day’ revival based on local, seasonal, sustainable fish – introducing consumers to discover new varieties of storied seafood and reconnect us with those who risk their lives to harvest the bounties of the sea.
Q+A with Filmmakers and Producers Darby Duffin and Adam Jones and renowned fishery expert, Tommy Gomes.
Tommy Gomes, known as Tommy the Fishmonger, is a San Diego native with Portuguese roots and a long family history in tuna fishing. After retiring from commercial fishing, he became a fishmonger in 2003 and helped grow a leading seafood supplier. In 2011, he was named one of San Diego Magazine’s “50 People to Watch.” He later founded Catalina Offshore Product’s Seafood Education and Nutrition Center and the nonprofit Collaboration Kitchen to promote seafood education. A champion of sustainable fishing and zero-waste practices, Gomes is especially known for creating a market for underutilized parts of the opah fish. His mission is to bring fresh, local seafood from San Diego’s fishermen to tables across the country.
