Southern California’s Largest Food and Wine Festival Incorporates Sustainable Seafood Tastings, Discussions and More During Several Events Featuring Top Culinary Advocates

San Diego, CA (October 13, 2016) – Southern California’s largest wine and food festival, the San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival® held November 14-20, 2016 aims to educate and inform attendees on the importance of sustainable fishing practices during several seafood centric events held during the 13th annual culinary classic.

San Diego is poised to become the Nation’s new mecca for responsible, sustainable seafood, and the commerce, cuisine, and science that nourishes it. Weaving this theme into several events, the San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival seeks to educate and create conscious consumers that can help ride the tide in support of the chefs and fishermen who are committed to the livelihood of the ocean and its creatures. Local sustainable seafood champion and Executive Chef and Owner of The Land & Water Co, Rob Ruiz comments that San Diego is the Super Bowl of sustainability, and the commerce and science that nurtures it.

“In recent years, San Diego has emphasized the use of locally raised, naturally nutrient rich, and flavor-packed produce and proteins,” continued Ruiz. The San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival provides a unique opportunity to unite chefs, science, fishermen and foodies in an effort to create a global example of the importance of sea conservation.”

During this year’s Festival, San Diego chefs join the conversation and provide unique insights through several seafood centric events that explore the growing ocean-to-table dining trend. Throughout the week, sustainable seafood practices are woven into numerous tastings, and celebrity chef, top culinary advocate and festival headliner, Rick Moonen or rm seafood and Rx Boiler Room discusses the dangers of over-fishing at several events.

At this year’s festival, sustainability is king through several seafood-centric events, including:
The Fish Taco TKO hosted by Rick Moonen: San Diego’s top taco makers battle it out to be named the city’s best sustainable fish taco. This mouthwatering battle features the city’s top chefs in a head-to-head showdown that is as equally good for the tastebuds as it is for the conscious. This event also features beer and tequila stations and live music from Bulevar Descarga. Awards will be given for Judges’ Choice and People’s Choice. Competitors include: Casanova Fish Taco, Don Chido, Duck Dive, Izakaya, Miss B’s Coconut Club, Neighborhood, The Oceanaire Seafood Room, Pacific Beach Fish Shop, Parq Restaurant & Nightclub, The Promiscuous Fork, San Diego Taco Company, and Tin Roof. Tuesday, November 15 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. | Quartyard | $50 per person

Ocean-To-Table Luncheon: This five-course, wine-paired meal features a who’s who of chefs with a demonstrated passion for the fruits de mer. During the luncheon,each chef prepares a sustainable seafood dish while discussing the role of seafood in their life and career. Featured Chefs include: Bernard Guillas and Ron Oliver of The Marine Room; Rick Moonen of rm Seafood and RX Boiler Room; Dean James Max of DJM Restaurants and James Republic; Evan Cruz, of Arterra; Amy DiBiase of Tidal; Jason McLeod of Ironside Fish & Oyster; Rob Ruiz of The Land & Water Co., and Andrew Spurgin of Bespoke Event Styling & Menu Design. Expedition: Tuna Harbor Dockside Market + VIP Lexus Grand Tasting: Rick Moonen and Rob Ruiz lead a privately guided tour of San Diego’s Tuna Dockside Harbor with sustainability talks, tastings, and a signed copy of Rick’s book. This package also includes VIP tickets to the Lexus Grand Tastingand a chef’s table experience by Rob Ruiz with freshly prepared sushi and sashimi from fish procured during that morning’s tour. Safe Harbor: Sustainable Seafood Myths, Truths and Misinformation: Featuring nationally prominent chefs, local fishermen, academics and activists, this session takes a multi-disciplinary look at our seafood choices and the impact they have on the long-term viability of harvested seafood and the wellbeing of the oceans. This live panel discussion includes food and drink from Chef Isabel Cruz that utilize local farms and fishmongers.
