Early memories of two brandy barrels filled with his father’s homemade wine cultivated Todd’s lifelong passion for wine and agriculture that persists today. Cal Poly trained in the Agricultural Sciences, Todd began working with wine over 20 years ago on California’s Central Coast. It was there in San Luis Obispo County that he fell in love with the rolling hills, native oaks and Old Vine Zinfandel.
Although many vintners prefer a hands off or minimalist approach to wine making, Todd believes the winemaker’s role is one of custodian and guardian. “We guide the grapes from the field all the way to the bottle – all living things can use a little nurturing and guidance once in a while!” Todd brings this experience, expertise and passion for creating a beautiful craft product to his role as Lead Winemaker at Négociant Urban Winery in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego. Under Todd’s supervision this budding winery is quickly becoming a favorite stop for local wine enthusiasts.
In addition to his role at Négociant, Todd spends much of his time building and tending to gardens and vineyards. Obsessed with value added foods in general, he helps transform and preserve a variety of foods and beverages into new possibilities.
